Can a long distance relationship actually work?

Im from Arizona and my ex moved to Washington early this month. We broke up because we felt a long distance relationship would not work. He doesnt plan on moving back to Az, and i still have 4 years of schooling left so it would be a long time living apart. Since hes moved ive missed him A LOT and think that i would want to try this long distance thing out. Do you think it would even be worth talking to him about it?
