What is the purpose of "theater mode" on my Sony and Blue Ray player?

I have a 52" Sony Bravia HDTV, and recently purchased a Sony Blue Ray player. The remote for the Blue Ray player can control whether I want to watch in "Theater Mode" on the set. Could someone explain to me the advantage of using that setting? What I detect is a darker picture, diluted colors. Is there a benefit to watching in that mode? Exactly what does it do to the picture when in Theater Mode?

    theater mode

if u don't use theater mode then movies look fake like a home video recorder. kind of self defeating to dumb down the clarity but that's the reality of normal tv hd picture goal versus movies
