There is no such thing as "free", because the powers that be choose to see it as theft. There are secret negotiations concerning copyright infringement going on right now. These negotiations are world-encompassing and no information is being leaked about them. What this means is that eventually, all downloads will be tracked and logged. If it is illegal, you will be prosecuted.

Having said that, BitTorrent is no more dangerous for viruses as is Limewire. As far as your computer's integrity is concerned, just don't download anything with a .exe file extension.
