some other form.....? .....such as financial support for the widow by the deceased's brothers?

Did it continue in some areas or cultures longer than in others? Or was this something that ceased with the Temple in 70 C.E.?

Well, If my mother had this happen, I'd have one sexy step-father.

Some Jews do. I've met a Jewish couple that have been married in total for 50 years, 24 to one brother, and 35 to the other. They were Orthodox, but still.
