...had 25 pens, how many pens did she star? a girl bough 6 pens,and give away 3 pens,after buying 5 more pens, she had 25 pens, how many pens did she start with? explain how you got your answer.
 
she started with 17 pens because 6-3=3, 3+5=8, 25-8=17 she had 17 pens to start with
 
she started with 17

working the problem backwards - start at 25 pens, she bought 5 but we're doing it backwards so this time around

bought = subtract
give away = add

so we have 25 pens - 5 = 20

gave away 3 means 20+3 = 23

bought 6 = 23-6=17

working it all out you get 17(start) +6she bought= 17+6=23
23 give away 3 is 23-3=20

then bought 5 more =20+5=25

and there you have it ^^
 
17. Take 25 (end result) and subtract how many she added [(6-3=3) and (5)]. So 25-3-5=17. To check your answer take 17 as how many she started with, add 6, subtract 3, then add 5. If you get 25, then it is correct.
 
Just do the question in reverse.

She has 25 in the end, so take away the 5 she buys and she has 20.
Then if she gets the 3 pens she gave out and has a total of 23 pens.
Finally take away the 6 she bought and you get 17 pens.

Therefore she started with 17 pens.
