I recently purchased a cello that is of a fairly good quality, but I noticed the bridge's shape is a bit strange in the way it slopes to one side. Since I'm a beginner, I don't know if this is normal or not, since every other one I've seen has more of an even shape. Perhaps this is just a variation?

An online image of one not so extreme. More normally shaped: http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/5/4/3/247543.jpg

All I know is that it makes it impossible to use the cello mute I bought which seems to be shaped for one of the more typical ones.
