Is DivX, XviD and AVC (H.264) all MPEG-4? What's the difference?

I saw that DivX is MPEG-4 and AVC is MPEG-4 and XviD is MPEG-4 but what is the difference with all of them? By the way, what is regular MPEG-4?

    >> Oh and if they are all MPEG-4 and the iPod Touch is an MPEG-4 player, would that mean that I can play AVC, XviD and DivX on my iPod (given that they are *.mp4, 640x480 resolution and that they are 1000 kbps or less)

they have to be mp4 files to load on the ipod. different movie rippers give different file names to the files ripped, but the importand part is the extension , the part after the period.

like a .mpeg is different than .mp4
