Actually Lincoln took the slavery issue off the table to get the south to come back. He also wanted to ship slaves back to Africa too. The civil war was not about slavery.
No, because it would be unwarranted government interference in the Free Market.
Yes today's Republicans would have fought for the slaves. Get your facts straight. It was liberal democrats who were in favor of slavery.
No. Today's Republicans are conservatives. The Republicans of the 1850s and 1860s were liberal and were even considered radical by the Southern white population. Lincoln's name didn't even appear on the ballot in 1860 in most Southern states.
The conservative position in Lincoln's day was to defend the institution of slavery. The conservatives considered any attempt by the federal government to adversely affect the institution of slavery as an incursion on states' rights.
When Lincoln would not compromise on the issue of slavery in the territories negotiations broke down completely and the Civil War was just about inevitable.
Lincoln was a Marxist murderer!
Liberals are so racist.
well, they would be taking money out of not working at all democrats pockets, (some things never change) Republicans keep the freed the slaves line going because the uneducated American public has been told since first grade that the civil war was about freeing the slaves, and not about building a stronger federal government, wealth, and the industrial revolution.
I wouldn't say it was the republicans who fought to end slavery.
I would say it was a group of ministers and writers and activists from Boston who with the help of some New Yorkers and some clever lawyers from Ohio and the republican party was formed with a platform by those who stood to gain a fortune. Slavery was the wedge issue. Retaining political control and dominance in Washington was part of the equation.
Would the republicans fight? For slaves?
Not unless they were all wearing big gold chains around their necks.
We would have fought for freedom for the slaves. Not for supremacy of the federal government over the states, however, but definitely for civil liberties.
