Why can't I play Blue Ray Disk DVDs on my Playstation 3 but I can play normal...

Hi... I may be wrong on this but, i'm almost positive that i was told that blue ray and xbox 360 disks are done in the same kind of format i.e, different to standard DVDs and games, which is why they will not play on standard format machines like PlayStation's and dvd players etc etc
