It used to be that people legitimately cared how everyone else was doing. Now, people say it to be nice and make you think that they care. It's sad, I know.

it's just something people in society do, like shake hands. it's habit and considered good manners. though most people say fine, if you said ok or bad, people would probably ask what's wrong. plus, its a good conversation starter. good question, btw.

haha this is funny to think about. and most of the time you can catch yourself doing the same thing to people you aren't good friends with. they say "hey how are you?" as they pass because it is social convention. we are socially brought up to say that and we dont even realize it. we say it and yet when we actually get an answer, which we rarely do, we dont want to listen. the response to the "hey how are you?" is "good, and you?" - most of the time we aren't "good". we're either great, wonderful, awful, or alright. we dont say our real feelings either - it's all fake and it's what we have been socially brought up to do. we go through the motions and we dont even realize it - but you are realizing it, so good! yay! it's funny to observe this, because neither party cares or gives/wants to know the real answer.

I don't think it is so much that they care as to how you are doing. Most who ask this, only ask because they are trying to give an impression that they are being kind to you. Think of it this way, how would it sound if someone just greeted you with the words, "Hi" and that was it? If you add, "Hi sir/ma'am how are you doing today" then it adds something extra. it causes the person to feel more welcome than just a simple "Hi". The fact is, we as humans seek to feel welcomed even by those we do not know. So adding that little extra makes a difference and it causes one to feel as if they are valued more highly. So its not that the person asking actually cares about the person personally, although there are some who genuinely do, but its about making the person feel more welcome.
