    Make cigarettes Illegal?

should they be made illegal straight off the back?
or should they start off small with making certain areas just for smoking and those are the only places smokers can smoke? what do you have to say about making cigarettes illegal? and what rights are being taken away from people, because they want to make cigarettes illegal? let me know all the rights that are being removed or taken away from people by making cigarettes illegal? No stupid answers please want real info!

or should they make a pack of cigarettes really expensive until people just cant afford them and no longer want to buy them cuz there not worth it? like make a pack $15-20 bucks each and then a box $50-75 bucks each? how do you think it should be started or if at all?

I disagree. I think more things should NOT be illegal. We are adults and should have the right to do what we want, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody. Keep it illegal for minors to purchase. I'm all for designated areas for smokers, because it bothers and it's unhealthy for everyone else. I can understand the government taxing it like crazy to make money off it and to curb people from spending the money on cigarettes (the money is what got me to quit). What I don't agree with is making more things illegal. Alcohol and tobacco are the worst drugs in the world and kill thousands of people every year but are still legal, and should remain so.

If they made cigarettes illegal, NJ would cease to exist. They'll never be made illegal. Their sales generate too much money. Nobody wants to give up that golden goose.

Yes the simple answer is that it should be made illegal but there are also other things to take into considerating - not just health. Firstly, if you were to ban purchasing cigarettes, hardcore smokers would still do anything to find a nicotine fix, it really won't help matters to clog up our prison systems even more.

There is also the amount of tax the government recieves with each pack bought, this is probably the main reason they haven't been banned.

And the next thing, freedom of choice, many smokers wouldn't be happy if they were to just suddenly be banned from smoking. It is similar to letting a child have one bite of a chocolate bar and then taking it away from them.

Totally! Cigarettes only cause harm to people, it opens the doorway to many types of cancer, you can basically call cigarettes cancer sticks!

tobacco-specific taxes and excise fees generate tens of billions of dollars, not to mention the sales tax per pack (in states that have sales taxes). Not going to happen. Ever wonder _why_ they don't just tax them out of existence? That's why. Enough people hate smoking now that they could very well get away with it. But they don't. That should tell you something.

Making cigarettes illegal sounds good. It could save lives. But it won't work. People will either make them and sell them illegally, or smuggle them from some other country. This will swell another country's treasury at the expense of yours.

Increasing the tax can help persuade people to quit. But some will simply buy from smugglers. The UK loses a fortune in lost revenue every year to smokers who import from other European countries.
