...thinking it was Tom Cruise? only to find out they're talking about Kelly McGillis? ... like who cares?

Mischievous, I'd say, knowing extremely well that people would think it was Tom Cruise. But everyone knows he's gay, so that wouldn't be news, would it?
 
You're right, no one cares about her and that was done on purpose to grab attention. Cheap journalism.
