Why do conservatives try to say the GOP has been for civil rights for African...

...Americans when that was not true? All the "southern racist Democrats" like Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms, left the Democratic Party once the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed by Lyndon Johnson, and became Dixiecrats, and then became modern-day Republicans.

Not to mention, the Southern Strategy started by Richard Nixon and used ever since has kept the South in Republican hands.

Barrack Urkel, maybe you should stop parsing quotes from the article: "Although the phrase "Southern strategy" is often attributed to Richard Nixon strategist Kevin Phillips, he did not originate it,[1] but merely popularized it."

You can't attribute things to parties.
    Here is why:
The Republican party USED TO BE THE LIBERAL PARTY
The Democratic party USED TO BE THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY.

Lincoln, a progressive, or liberal President, freed the slaves

The southern democrats, who were conservative opposed that, and any rights that were granted to the negroes [term of the time, sorry]

The so-called solid south, since the civil war and up to LBJ, was solidly Democrat, because of the resentment, etc.

That's why, until fairly recently Conservative Democrats won elections in the south.

Then, they went with the Republican party, which was MORE conservative

Not sure exactly when, but I think Goldwater

because that's what sounds good. both sides are liars and really only favor keeping people enslaved to social programs so they never really how to take care of themselves because that's what lines their pockets.
