I know that it is perfectly legal to unlock a phone for free as I am no longer in a contract and there must be a way of doing it for free somewhere on the internet.

Yes you can unlock.But you have to pay for the unlocking service.I found the unlocking solution here www.wickedunlock.com . With the help of this, you can easily unlock.

You can get the Unlock code from service provider and Unlock it.
