what does the number in the name of a mic have to do with the mic itself?

like does it define how many decibels it can handle, or what frequencies it is best for? higher the number, lower the number, what do they mean? for example, what does the 57 in SM57 mean?

It doesn't mean anything. It's just a model number. You should check the specs on any mic your looking to buy but the model numbers are of no help.
