Why won't my records play loud?

So I hooked my turn table up to my stereo system, and it's a KENWOOD, and in really good condition. But I have to max the volume to just hear a little bit of the record. The connection was fine so I don't know why it's not working. I've tried just about every setting for it. I have my turntable hooked up with just two little speakers now, and it works great so I know it's not the turntable itself.
