My son as moved to north America (California) from the UK if he had a satellite box which is used in the UK would this work OK for him to pick up UK tv from California with a standard dish fitted.

No. The TV formats are different, so I would think he would need a new box. Have him contact his satellite provider to be sure - they may offer to have him trade his current box for a newer one.
