if a truck can only drive when the 4 wheel drive is tuned on can you drive

it on the free way? i want to buy my freinds truck and when its in drive it dont move but when you put it in 4 wheel drive it drives. wondering if i can drive it on the free way like that

You can drive up to 55 miles per hour in 4 wheel drive. However if it was me looking at that truck I'd take it to a mechanic before the purchase. This is typically free and well worth it! Plus it sounds like there is either something wrong with the transfer case or the transmission which would be an expensive fix and a huge hassel.
