Will a Regular DVD player play an HD, or Blue Ray disc?

We recently got an HD television, but we have not upgraded our DVD player yet. Will it be necessary to buy an HD dvd player? Also, what is the difference bettween HD and Blue Ray?

HDDVD is dead, all the companies are switching over to Blu-Ray

Yes you need a new player to play Blu-Ray movies, but if you order HD movies from cable or satellite, you don't need a new player.
