Can I use a cingular sim card for an imported cell phone from asia?

I lost my NokiaN81 recently and I am going to buy a new phone soon. I was wondering if I can use the sim card for AT&T/Cingular for the cell that has a slot in it. I don't really understand about the GMS Network 850/900/1900,etc. thing. Can anyone inform me about this before I make my final decision on getting a new cell phone?

Well, Those GSM numbers are the bands that it supports, like radio frequency. If it is a Quad Band phone which supports all four bands, you can use it anywhere in the world.

But the bands that cell phones use in North America are the
850/1900 MhZ. Just make sure that it says it supports those GSM bands/frequencies.
