Yes of course you can make calls, put music from your itunes. Add applications from your itunes.. You can even use your internet safari without any data plan just use WiFi connection.

What att didnt mentioned was, YES you can make a calls as long you "ACTIVATE IT." But ofcourse, your friends iphone already activated. BUT soon you replaced his sim card to yours, You will have the usb and disk image with emergency calls ONLY.

But, there's a way to bypass the activation. by doing the fake activation using jailbreak. With this you can still use your pay as you go sim card no problem at all.... If the iphone start messing all you need is to reverse it back to factory setting by restoring it and you can return it back to apple for replacement.
