If you're in an accident, how does OnStar still work?

I wrecked my old car some time ago, which didn't have OnStar. Whenever my battery exploded, no power options in my car worked. I'm looking into another new car, and I'm considering the new Tahoe which comes equipped with OnStar. How does OnStar, which is run through your radio and battery, work if the power supply has been destroyed in an accident?

My guess is that it wouldn't, but not all accidents would fry your electrical system, so it would be beneficial to have in most situations.
