Instinct vs. Palm Pre
When my wife and I switched over to Sprint (from T-Mobile) I thought it was a bad move because I really wanted a BlackBerry Storm. Without me knowing, she got herself a BlackBerry Curve and she got me the Instinct s30. At first, I didn't really like the phone, I guess I was used to the touch-screen interface of the iPhone that everyone in my family has. I referred to the s30 as an iPhone wanna be; that was on a Monday, by Wenesday I had gotten over the iPhone comparisons and actually started to enjoy the phone itself - there are though certain quirks that I don't like: No audible e-mail confirmation, you can't place your favorite mp3 as a ringer, the web browser uses an antiquated scroll/zoom bar, you only get mobile web so in essence your not getting the entire web page (although the Opera Mini was VERY nice and easier to use than the default browser), Instincts' apps are fairly weak (when compared to the iPhone), no accelorometer although there is a tilt feature that you can use to scan up/down/side to side on websites and lastly, the interface is relatively simple. On the plus side, you have SprintTV/Radio, the touch screen keyboard is VERY innovative (you can go from landscape QWERTY to portrait ABC just by tapping a button (you can also write on the screen and the phone will produce the words), checking email/text messages is as easy as tapping one button, you can't beat Sprint's 3G (this was the main reason why we switched), the phone feels a lot more comfy in your hand than the iPhone, the GPS by itself is totally worth it, the Live Search feature is by far one of the most neatest features of the phone, the heptic vibration is really different and cool and, for $99 (after a $100 mail-in rebate) this is pretty much an excellent phone to buy. But, that's just it; if you want a really awesome phone with some pretty cool features - look no further, the s30 is the way to go. However, if you're a Sprint customer and want the mack-daddy of SMARTPHONES (or something that comes extremely close to an iPhone) get the Palm Pre. Personally speaking, I am going to return my s30 this Saturday (the 6th) to get a Palm Pre. Not that the Instinct isn't worth it, because it is, but due to the simple fact that it isn't a smartphone and I need all of the extras that a smartphone offers for my job and (to simplify) my personal life. Couple that with the fact that it's only and extra $100 (after mail-in rebate) and the option that Sprint has given the customer is not only financially viable but also a very smart and clever one. So, to recap: If you want a good solid, touchscreen, straight foward phone (because that's what it is, a PHONE), then the Instinct s30 is definitely the way to go. If you want to get the pinnicle of Sprint's lineup/Smartphone, then the Palm Pre is the way to go. Either which way, both are excellent choices.
