We have a Plasma 42" but it's only 720p. Would it be worth it to get a blueray if we don't have 1080p? I heard you can't tell a deference if the TV is under 42" and you're sitting 10 feet away.

Assuming your current player upconverts to 1080i, the difference in resolution at 10 feet on a 42" screen will be barely perceptible.
I'd wait until the players are under $100.
If you like the image quality of High-Def channels (which are 720p, albeit compressed), AND you watch a lot of movies, then a Blu-Ray player is a good investment - even if you aren't using it to full potential.
No, at 10 feet away from a 42" screen at 720p, you're not going to see much difference between a good upconverting DVD player and a blu ray player. If you want the bd-live functionality of being able to go out to the internet and get additional footage and extras, then that would be a reason to go with blu ray. Also, if you have a good surround sound system that can handle the lossless audio on blu ray (Dolby TrueHD and Dts HD Master audio, that may be a reason to upgrade.
Since BluRay players are sub $200, I think it is well worth it to upgrade. There is a HUGE difference in picture quality going from standard def DVD's to HD.
Try this: Watch the standard def version of a good ABC, CBS, NBC show tonight. In the middle - switch to the HD version of the channel.
Go back and forth. Do this several times.
Do see a difference between up-converted standard def and HD?
I am pretty sure you will see a difference. This is what you can expect if you upgrade to BluRay.
"worth it" - this is between you and your bank account and your interest in movies.
