It has been the second time he had the chance to get 6 titles in a row at a Grand Slam event. Of course, he got almost all Open era records, but some guys prior the late 60s have done better. In these days, only clay and grass and we have to say that each Champion were granted a free pass to the next year final...
Federer didn't enjoy the privilege of getting free final passes, neither any player since a while. It has been 40 or more years it's no longer like that.
The Master didn't deserve his name in this game; I don't even know if he ended with half his first serves in. His forehand was horrible and he made something like 60 errors. He had a poor 5/22 break point won. Of course, out of this, Del Potro was to blame for some of his errors, but it is clearly unusual for Roger. Even with a door left open, you still have to do one more step to get in and Juan Martin succeed at taking his chances.
The kid surely did a great game and I don't wanna get anything away from him, but I never saw a glance of the Roger Federer on this court tonight. I was very disapointed both by the ending and by how Federer kept giving point and wasting chances. At Rolland-Garros, at Madrid, eve nat the Australian Open, he showed such great game level and had an awesome service. Always around the 68-70% in and many aces. Today, he was one or two inches too long on his shots and got more nets than usual. Del Potro had a chance and didn't waste it.
Congrats.
