Why I can't use songs as my ringtone?

I just bought SOny Ericson w580i and when I transfer them to my phone I can't use them as ringtone, I can use them as message alert though but not as ring tone. Do anyone know why?Also, when I transfered some picuters and music it dissapeared the day after . It appears then it dessapears and so on. Then sometimes it says that the memory stick is not in and it is so I have to take it out and put it in again and then it works. Help!!!
