If all the news about GM has you thinking about buying an American car now, when prices are low, there are currently 11 models on Consumer Reports recommended list out of 50+ GM models that are on*sale. They are: the Buick Lucerne; Cadillac DTS; Chevrolet Avalanche, HHR, Malibu, and half-ton Silverado; the Silverado?s twin GMC Sierra; the Pontiac Vibe; the Saab 9-3 and 9-5; and the Saturn Aura. (See how GM compares against other domestic automakers in our ?Detroit report card.?)
Four of these models are scheduled to be discontinued (or spun off to another automaker) under GM?s restructuring plan. The Pontiac Vibe will be discontinued. The Saabs and the Aura may be spun off to another automaker if GM can find buyers for these brands. The Saab 9-3, and especially the 9-5, are older models that were nearing the end of their shelf life in the market, anyhow.
That would leave GM with seven recommended models for now.
Other GM vehicle?s, including the Cadillac CTS and the Chevrolet Traverse, have done well in our tests, but either have poor reliability as reported by our subscribers in our annual Auto Reliability Survey, or are too new to have reliability results.
If you?re considering buying a GM, it has never been more important to buy a recommended model. With resale values down, those who take advantage of today?s low prices should plan on hanging on to their cars as long as possible. So buying one that will continue to satisfy your needs and be reliable well into the future is key.
