Originally, they were formed largely through cultural change over time. If two populations are separated with no communication, as they were until only a few centuries ago, their religions will change and eventually become completely different.

In this day and age, anyone can set up a cult and grab some followers.

God wants diversity so he created many nationalities and implanted in their mind different perspectives.
Like the seasons which has summer winter autumn spring and each season God wants us to cloth ourselves according to the weather.
