Why do SOME christians(not all of them) complain about welfare when Jesus would...

...be all for it? Jesus did say to help the poor didn't he? He had his disciples give up what they had to follow him and he also talked about selling your possessions and giving your money to the poor.

So why is it that some christians(again I am saying some, not all) complain about welfare? It makes no sense to claim to supposedly love and follow Christ yet have a stroke at the though of seeing a little bit of your money go to the poor or less privileged which is what your savior would want you to do.

Again if you are christian and don't want to end welfare altogether this is not directed at you. This is only for those who want to end welfare completely and who claim to supposedly be followers of Christ.
@ Laila. I'm guessing you aren't very familiar with republicans.

I've never heard of a Christian that's against welfare before.

@Yamanka: Jesus helped those who couldn't help themselves.

Welfare is the least efficient way to help the poor and ends with them being dependent on (read enslaved by) the government. It also discourages individuals from feeling responsible to help the poor.

Christ was talking about individuals helping the poor, not at the point of a Roman spear. That would not be free-will giving. The inspired apostle Paul also wrote, "...that if any man would not work, neither should he eat" (2 Thess. 3:10).
Welfare should not be a federal matter. States and communities should take care of their own citizens.

Just an interesting thought welfare originated from the churches. "Early English legislation, the Poor Laws required local parishes to provide relief to the deserving poor(those who were elderly, ill or disabled). Parishes were administrative districts organized by the Church of England." They had a poor relief originate in the 1600s and revised in 1832. So there is some info about the origin of welfare so these people that are christian that are wanting to end it need to research it more and find out where it started.

Helping the poor is an admirable thing.

Giving money to those who simply don't like to work is not "helping the poor". We call that concept "enabling". That is why we have 4th and 5th generation welfare recipients.

Teach a man to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime, give a man a fish and he'll expect you to show up every day with another fish about the same time.

One HUGE problem with your theory my friend..... Jesus had NOTHING to do with government ideas or doings..... He directed us, through our FAITH to take care of each other.... The so called *churches* were to *step up* and help people... As Christan's or believers etc., we are to *give* through our *church houses*, what ever they may be *denomination*, and then it should be distributed OUT to others.....

So, rather Jesus would or would not approve of *welfare* I really can't say.... I do *feel* He would really not worry about it one way or the other, for like I said, He did NOT concern himself with government issues......

DUH, the Bible is very clear. A man who does not work does not eat.
