so this girl told me that she reason she did something was to vent...what does that mean?

If someone is venting, it means that they are releasing some pent up emotions. For example, this girl may have had a bad day so she tells you about all of the awful stuff that happened even though neither one of you can do anything about it. Just talking about it releases tension.
