Leave at least 8 inch clearance as you can starve the unit for air and cost you a couple thousand for new unit. Are you a gambler??

whether return or supply, restricting the airflow on either side of an a/c can cause it to freeze up, which leads to a mountain of trouble.....leave at least 4 inches in front of the grille.

The air conditioner needs proper air circulation, just like your furnace. I would not recommend it.
