Is my parakeet singing or screaming in agony?

Here's another in a series of "newbie budgie owner" questions. My parakeet, who makes typical parakeet noises, seems to really like or really hate music. Problem is, I'm not sure which.

During some songs, she immediately chimes right in and chirps along. With other songs, she really goes off on a full blown squawk, like she's gagging on steel wool.

Pardon me if this is a "stupid question," but I want to make sure that what we think of as, "Aw, how cute ... she's singing along!" isn't really her way of begging us to turn off that godawful noise.

Maybe the bird has better taste in music than the people in your household. LOL.
