My laptop has been emitting a high pitched whine lately and when I plug in my headphones it disappears, I have tried shutting down and restarting and I just don't know how to fix it. Can you please tell me what it is and how to fix it?

It sounds like the spirit of my diseased brother, he does that sometimes, to eliminate it, get on your knee's and pray to the oogly googly spirit for peace and quiet. And send $100. to the Salvation Army.
