    Downdraft, retractable, kitchen island vents?

Can you use a downdraft, retractable, flush mount, cook top vent on a kitchen island that does not have any external venting? I'm redoing the kitchen in an older condo building and there is no access to a bulkhead over where I want the island to be. Is it possible for this type of vent to just push the air through a filter and then blow it into the apartment?
