Cat constantly whines after introducing a new cat?

We have a 1 year old neutered male that has been alone all of his life with us. He's always been very friendly and nice. Just yesterday we bought an 11 year old neutered male and have been keeping him locked in a separate room. Our 1 year old constantly cries and whines now that we have another cat. If we pick him up or get near him, he starts to whine. Why is he doing this and what can we do? We are worried that this will change his sweet and outgoing personality forever.

I'm pretty sure that the cats do not want to play together. The 1 year old hisses and gets very upset if he even gets a glimpse of the 11 year old.

Introduce the cats. Maybe put the carriers side-by-side at first. Or on leashes at first. Sometimes all it is - they want to play.

    Good luck.

Introduce your kitten to the cat. He's probably whining because he can hear / smell the cat, and wants an introduction, so they can play. Or, he may be feeling that you're trying to "replace" him. Either way, an introduction should be made......and give him lots of cuddles in the meantime.

If you have them separated, in order to "quarantine" it for awhile to see if the new one is healthy, then OK....but, the sooner you let them get acquainted, the better.

Take something soft (blanket, shirt, etc)...rub it all over the new cat, and give it to the younger one to "cuddle" with for awhile. Same thing in reverse......"scent" something with the younger one's scent and give it to the older one for awhile. You can see what kind of reaction you'll get, from each of them. The cats can be introduced to each other slowly, this way.......

Two males usually will get along in a household better than 2 females! Sounds weird, but that's the way it is, sometimes......

    Hope this helps........Good luck.
