Baby screaming when put in bed..used to be fine though?

My 3 month old was an amazing sleeper...paci in mouth and out cold in 2 seconds, for naps as well as nightime. Suddenly he's screaming like someone is hurting him everytime I put him in bed...I stay with him, trying not to pick him up, and I keep offering the pacifier until he finally calms down (sometimes I have to pick him up and he'll fall asleep immediately on me) I know he's tired when I put him down... so ... do you think he's testing me already? to see if I'll pick him up and rock him to sleep?
