What bug did I see(read description)?

I live on Long Island in New York. It's the summer. So today I walked into a room and saw a black bug, two segments, no visible antennas. I see them quite often. They have shells and are squishable. They don't fly, or at least I haven't seen this in my many encounters with them. I tried to crush it multiple times and missed. (sorry animal lovers) Then it became aware and started moving. Then quite randomly, a second bug shot about 3 feet up into the air coming from the first bug. Then both bugs preceded to go into hiding under a table.

Were those bugs getting it on? I feel kinda bad for interrupting them now.

What was up with the bug shooting so high up in the air?
