Making it there is one thing. That's easy enough. I mean, have you ever tried counting all the names in the credits for one movie? It takes a whole freaking town just to piece together a 2-hour blockbuster.
Getting a lucrative career out of it is another all together. It's more about timing and who you know than what you know. So buddy up with anybody who can help you get a foot in the door. But don't suck up. Nobody likes a suck-up.
Seek out small-time up-and-coming production agencies, indy film groups and such. No matter what they say about Hollywood being a bunch of sellouts, 95% of them would jump at the opportunity to go Hollywood and put their crew in the SAG (Screen Actors' Guild). If you're with them in their infancy, and you prove yourself, they're likely to take you with them if they go big.
