no... only HD-DVD players can play HD-DVDs (which are discontinued anyway) and only bluray players can play bluray...
HD-DVD players and bluray players however are backwards compatible in there ability to play standard def DVDs.
an HDMI DVD player will (most of the time) upconvert the image quality of a standard DVD
