Its a cross refference to the maya calendar predicting "the end of times as we know it" which miraculously seems to fit with the bible (apocalypse) and some Nostradamus prophecies.
Its not the end. Its just the end of the Mayan calender, and several other ancient civilazations.
Its based on the procession of the equinoxes.
2012 is a prophecy based on astrology, the movement of the stars and their relation to human behavior, during certain planetary and star transitions the human race behaves in certain ways and attains different arrays of consciousness.. 2012 is the year that the photon belt of light (also known as the belt of information) is in perfect conjunctions with our planets including Earth, and it creates the Galactic Crossing which also happens to be aligned with the center of the Milky Way galaxy (the glimpse into Heaven), it does not mean the End, is means the Beginning of Understanding of who and what we are as a Human race experiencing life on this planet. Many of us are already in great awareness of this Universal truth, but 2012 is said to be the half way point, where everyone pretty much will know the truth of our existence.
How is it gaining such momentum?
The answer to this part, is that there is money to be made off movies.
You didn't hear anything about it until the movie trailers started... and even then, you had to watch the History channel, or look for it specifically.

it originated because december 21, 2012 is the date that the Mayan calender stops at.... thats about it... we just now assume the world it over, lol.
the answer is, nobody THOUGHT. end of story. this arises from the fact that the mayan calendar ends on dec 21 2012. some guy assumed this meant the world was ending, and he wrote a book on it. unfortunately he did NOT consult the mayan descendants who actually KNOW what it means. it signifies the end and beginning of a sun cycle, nothing sinister.
"Who did the math to say 2012 is the end day? "
nobody. people have done the math to DISPROVE it, but the math to say its happening was never done...thus why it ISNT happening.

same reason as Y2K. people get scared easily with matters like this and don't do their own research. they then tell someone else and then that person gets scared to. add to that stupid shit like the history channel perpetuating rumors to get viewers, and it spins out of control just as Y2K did. i promise you if you do your research on this subject, you will never be afraid of it again. fear of a future event is irrational, especially when all evidence points to it NOT happening. everyone will wake up on dec 22 2012 and realise they still have to do their christmas shopping, and this mass panic to do shopping may result in a complete global economic meltdown, a nuclear war, and then a nuclear winter resulting in the end of the world....OMG!!2!12@1!! T3H PROPHECY IS CORRECT!!!!!!12112!@!12!!@11!
