I quit an Independent Contractor job. What will they say about me to

future employers? I was an Independent Contractor for a year. My company loved me; and frequently expressed how much they valued me. One day, I suddenly quit.

The policy at this company is that if you don't give a two-week notice before quitting, you will not be eligible for rehire.

I'm wondering what will they tell a potential employer who calls and asks the usual reference/employment check questions. Did I mess myself up since I didn't give a two-week notice?
Can't they say that the only reason they won't rehire is because I quit unexpectantly?

I quit because of miscarriages, and two deaths in my family. Before quitting, they knew what was going on with me; we had a lengthy conversation about these terrible events; and they were very compassionate & understanding.
Doesn't the fact that I was an "Independent" contractor count for anything? I was providing my services to them and I was compensated for the services that I provided. I wasn't employed by them.

By law they can only ask certain questions and one is if they would rehire you. If they say no, that leaves it up to the imagination which is much worse. Your best bet is to tell future employers what happened or they might think you did shoddy work, stole, or that type of thing.
