since the auto industry is going down. will it be a good career to further myself in or should i choose something else.

go for diesel.
there are WAY more opportunities (locomotives, generators, agricultural, over the road, heavy equipment) than in the automotive field and the pay is better on average. automotive mechanics coming out of most schools are just parts changers.
