I am currently in the military and have CLEP'ed pretty much all the basics of freshman year (Eng 101, College Algebra, etc). I have 18 months left in my contract and I'd like to get a jumpstart on a new career as a hygienist.

I understand the licensing is state-specific but pre-test the programs available run the gamut from 2 yr AS to 4 year BAS to certification. Everything I look up about the requirements for this career is so convoluted; I'd really appreciate it if someone who has launched a career as a dental hygienist (not assistant, please) could spell it out for me.

What are some good steps to take NOW so that a year and a half from now, I'll be ahead of the game?

I'll most likely be living in the Northern Virginia area while I'm going to school; afterwards, I'm not sure but let's go with Virginia for now.

Thanks for taking the time!
