How does my friends fish survive?

He has a very small tank maybe about 3-4 gallons, with no filiteration! Doesn't do any water changes I dont think! He has a gold fish in this small tank and I know they need a huge tank! So how can it survive?

Oh and it's lived for about 2 years so far!!

Well that is pretty amazing and cruel. Tell your friend to stop playing around and either give it away or get a larger tank. By putting it in a tank that small you are restricting swimming space and their natural growth (they grow quick). The fish has probably developed all types of internal problems due to stunted growth. Tell them to save the fish immediately. It is the equivalent of putting a human in a cardboard box.
