How do worms exit a dog's body?

here's the story: one day I was walking my 50 lb lab/sheep dog mix. she stopped to do her business. as i scooped up the poo i noticed many smallish, wriggling, white worms, as well as segments of some unknown species of worm.

since then i've been eyeing her stool like a hawk, poking and prodding for more parasites. strangely enough, i haven't seen one since that day.

    does that mean they're gone?

i'm wondering if the lack of worms in her poo has to do with the worm life cycle. maybe they exit the body at different stages, and may not be visible in their stool at all times.

needless to say, we have given both our dogs nematocidal worm treatment. any related tips would be highly appreciated.
