What's "in" in terms of handheld videogaming?

My son loves videogames, and I wanted to surprise him with a Gameboy because he doesn't have a handheld or anything like that. But I'm told that Gameboy is old news now. What's the new thing? How much does that cost? Please help! I just want to get something I know he'd like. Thanks!
