What's the range on a handheld, and what is the range on a regular CB mounted inside of your car/truck?
The standard transmission distance for a stock shelf CB is 10-20 miles. That's Line of Sight transmission distance not factoring in any obstructions. CB's can transmit much further if you amplify the signal though which isn't very hard. All in all you get what you pay for. I've seen some truckers out there with CB's that are so powerful they can bleed in to cell phone transmissions and completely silence any drivers within a 30 mile range.
As far as handhelds the range varies (yet again by what you pay for) The general distance measure of handhelds is around 2-12 miles. Cobra is amazing for handhelds anymore.
handheld-depending on terrain-2-4 miles. mounted-depending on terrain-8+ miles. the CB I had in my big rig talked about 24 miles before I added a linear.
Radio Shack has a few models (midland), and you may find some off brands at stores like KMart, Walmart, etc.
