what exactly is sprint and unlocked version of smartphone?

Was looking at samsung galaxy s2 online and came upon 2 different versions
1 being Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 - 16GB - Noble black (Unlocked) Smartphone (International version)
    and another is
Samsung Galaxy S II D710 Epic 4G Touch (Latest Model) - 16GB (Sprint) Smartphone

the only difference i see is that one is unlocked and another has carrier: sprint and also they have different model number. Was hoping if someone can explain to me what does carrier Sprint mean and does that mean if I buy the phone I have to sign a contract with sprint? Also why is the unlocked international version so much more expensive compared to the sprint version.
