I'm with '3' but want a smartphone. Can I get one?

I'm not great with mobiles, so I thought I'd ask you about them before being ripped off in a phone shop. I'm with 3 and have a contract that runs well into next year, but my phone keeps on breaking so I can either get it repaired or give in to the temptation of getting a smartphone i.e. one of the new flashy blackberries, iPhones or Palm Pre. Is this at all possible without switching network and wasting my contract with 3?
