If you have smartphone, do you have to upgrade your plan?

I'm in a family plan (I don't really have control over changing it because my parents pay for it) so I cannot upgrade accounts. I'm really set on getting a Blackberry Curve or Palm Treo and I don't want to get other texting phones (Glyde, enV2, etc...) because everyone else has them and no one at my school except 1 person has the Palm Treo and Blackberry's aren't as popular at my school as the other phones. Do I have to upgrade my plan to use smartphones (I just need the phone for texting, MAYBE IM, and calling people (of course))?

If your using the phone for just calling and texting you do not have to but be careful about using that phone. Its easy to accidentally get on the internet thats why they want you to switch to the blackberry plan or smartphone plans. But for IM's that requires internet to login so you won't be able to use that without being charged

You don't have to upgrade your plan to a smart phone service. However, if you don't you won't be able to take advantage of all the features that makes a smart phone a smart phone: email, internet, GPS, data transfer, instant messaging, etc.

I don't know, if your going to invest the money in a phone like that data plans for smart phones are usually only about $30 more a month on your phone bill. You might want to look into that!

    Hope that helped!
